THE ROCKET QUEENS TONIGHT in LOUISVILLE

The snow-pocalypse screwed up my original plans for this weekend (which was to be in a hot tub in the woods) BUT things like that getting cancelled makes way for what looks to be a really fun night ahead.

This is NOT AT ALL what it looks like outside here.

Less than 18 hours ago I was asked if I could DJ before and after an all girl Guns 'n' Roses cover band. Since I took off work for the ill-fated cabin trip, I was suddenly free and it doesn't hurt that the venue is literally one block from my house, add to that all my equipment is already loaded in my car from my gig last night. I said yes I can.
This morning I woke to find numerous people posting about this last minute show and several people that already knew who these chicks are and were saying very positive things on the internet about them. I checked out their website for pictures and videos and dammit they are good. REALLY GOOD. I am looking forward to meeting them and being a small part of the show at the New Vintage in Louisville, KY tonight.

Check these videos out.

And this too...

(I stole these pictures from their Facebook page and website.)

After tonight I will have some of my own photos and maybe a good video or two.

TONIGHT at The New Vintage (formerly Uncle Pleasant's)
TIME : Doors at 8pm
$8 (support touring bands!!!)
I will provide tunes before and after sets. Great show! Cool bar! It's Saturday!

ROCK SEXY Collage fun

I made this collage from LIFE Magazines from the 1940's and 50's.

Then I took a picture of it, put it on my computer and played with the filters.

Listen to ROCK SEXY live on Thursday nights at 10pm eastern time at ARTxFM

ROCK and ROLL Book Club: Please Kill Me

No rock and roll book club would be complete without this "Uncensored Oral History of Punk." For those of us that were not alive in the 60's and 70's, this book is the next best thing to being witness to what I consider some of the greatest music ever being created. I'm talking MC5, The Stooges, Velvet Underground, Ramones, New York Dolls,  Blondie, the Dictators, David Bowie, Dead Boys, ya know that kind of stuff.  And since I was not alive, this book gave me a sense of what it was like, and also laid the foundation for my music taste for the rest of my life, making it the Number One entry in the Rock and Roll Book Club.

Considered by some as a rock and roll "bible" of sorts, it is not only informative but funny, fucked up, tragically sad, and still oh so good. The book is comprised of a series of interviews done over several years by Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain. Interviewing everyone and anyone that was a player, the musicians, the producers, the photographers, the journalists, the record label guys, the groupies, the club owners, the friends, the girlfriends, the boyfriends, the girls who were boys and the boys who were girls and so on, Legs and Gillian give the most in depth look at this subject that there is. Declared one of the "top ten books of 1996" with good reason, I purchased it in 2000 when I was in high school and was still able to get an first edition. This was brought to my attention last April, when, along with my friends Sarah and Brett, I ventured to the UK campus in Lexington to hear Legs McNeil talk about Please Kill Me and his newest projects. When Legs signed my book, he was pleasantly surprised to see it in it's beat up condition, and said "Oh you have the first edition!" This night turned into a "top five night" (you'll find out more about those later) that you can read more about in a previous post, just click here.
Listen to the interview!

Needless to say, I was pretty freaking stoked about the possibility of hanging out with Legs McNeil, like even saying it is ridiculous! I did a book report on Please Kill Me for my senior humanities class. And then, not only did we talk to him after the discussion, Sarah and Brett did that terrific interview, and THEN we hung out with him for several hours and dropped him off at his hotel at about 1:30 in the morning. In my head I am saying "How the hell did I go from some suburban girl to hanging out with LEGS MCNEIL!?!" Apparently, I had been doing something right. Like having the right friends, for one...It was a thing, definitely a thing.

To sum it up, the book is great. It's entertaining, it's fucking great.  But don't take my word for it. Check out the PLEASE KILL ME website HERE !

This is NOT the same place we saw him at.
After the talk, he signs stuff.
"Blythe, Thanks for a wonderful night! You were the BEST! Love + Kisses, Legs"

Top Five Night!

Next time on Rock and Roll Book Club - The Dark Stuff by Nick Kent

KID THOMAS - One Wild Rock and Roller!

Oh my goodness, another tragic story of a great rocker gone too soon!

Kid Thomas
Born June 20th, 1934
Died April 5th, 1970

Wild mover-and-shaker maker Mississppi born and Chicago raised Kid Thomas' story is pretty sad. I didn't realize it when I bought his record from Norton. As I read the liner notes, and then scoured the internet for more about him, I was saddened as I found out he was another great rocker, along with Little Willie John, Bobby Fuller, Eddie Cochran, Sam Cooke, among others that had a sudden and tragic ending.

But let's focus on the music!
Living in Chicago, Kid worked with Muddy Waters, Elmore James, Bo Diddley, Howlin Wolf and his skills on the harmonica led him to often sit in for Little Walter when he was too inebriated to perform.

His first record "Wolf Pack was recorded in 1955 on Federal Records.
B/W
"The Spell"
(which I do not have and cannot find a YouTube video)

Not surprisingly, an original clean copy of this 45 is not easy to come by and if it is, it's not going to be cheap.
Despite how awesome both sides are, the record wasn't a hit and Federal dropped him. When two guys from Wichita were blown away by his set in Chicago, they got him a job at a bar in Wichita. In order to get there, Kid Thomas stole a car from a minister for whom he had been doing a little work.
The job in Wichita caught on and even when the band broke up Kid Thomas returned a month later to play with Hound Dog Taylor, proving to be a good draw. Yet, Kid Thomas eventually returned to Chicago, now highly influenced by Little Richard and the wave of rock and roll that had taken the country by storm, except for those blues clubs in South Side Chicago. He then headed west, and eventually landed in L.A. where his next round of frantic rock and rollers were recorded.

"Rockin' This Joint" was recorded in 1959 on Transcontinental Records.

He took a regular gig in LA and performed under the name Tommy Louis and the Rhythm Rockers or the Versatiles, but did not record for another 5 years

But when he did...
 He sure killed it.
"Wail Baby Wail" was recorded in 1965 on Muriel Records.
B/W

Now for the sad part. He never achieved commercial success (which we all know is never an indicator of greatness) and he worked for a landscaping company and in 1970 he struck and killed a child. Although he was cleared of manslaughter charges, the father of the child shot him in the head a short time later.
Aaaaand sigh...
It's the stuff of tragedies, really.

RIP Kid Thomas

Here is a great blog, done in 2009 by someone who knows a lot more than I do.
